I think it's the latter since I do not see any SIP traffic reaching Asterisk.

The way to debug connectivity to asterisk is to get to the asterisk console
asterisk -rvvvvvv and enable sip debugging like sip debug on , depending on version of course.
Asterisk will tell you what it likes and what not.

If you do not see SIP traffic then you have a deeper networking issue ....
